Nine rounds of vNKT cell reinfusion have significantly enhanced immunity, freeing patients from the worry of liver cancer recurrence

The liver is the only internal organ in the human body capable of regeneration and the largest digestive gland. It functions like a detoxification factory, facilitating the body's metabolism. When subjected to the onslaught of viral hepatitis, aflatoxin, alcoholic liver disease, contaminated drinking water, alcohol consumption, genetics, and other factors, the balance of the human immune system is disrupted, leading to the development of liver cancer.

The immune system plays a pivotal role in tumor control. An overly strong immune response can lead to allergic reactions and autoimmune diseases. When immunity is too low, it becomes unable to resist and eliminate bacterial and viral infections. When the immune system exhibits "oversights," cancer cells can evade capture by disguising themselves, which is known as the tumor immune escape mechanism. A balanced immune system can enhance the body's anti-cancer capabilities and reduce the likelihood of recurrence and metastasis.

Overview

Five years ago, Mr. Feng, who had been suffering from chronic hepatitis B for a long time, discovered two lesions in his liver during a physical examination, with a left liver size of 1.7x1.9cm and a right liver size of 0.4x0.5cm. For further treatment, Mr. Feng went to Beijing You'an Hospital for treatment and underwent abdominal resection of the left outer lobe of the liver and cholecystectomy for the left liver lesion. Postoperative pathology showed hepatocellular carcinoma, moderately differentiated, without involving the liver capsule; No cancer was found at the severed end. The lesion in the right lobe of the liver is relatively small and was observed and treated under the advice of the doctor. After surgery, Ridaxian and long-acting interferon have been regularly used for antiviral treatment.

Due to early detection and timely treatment, Mr. Feng thought he could get rid of the trouble of liver cancer. However, during the follow-up examination in October 2020, it was found that the lesion in the right liver had enlarged. In November, he underwent interventional ablation treatment. After ablation of the right lobe of the liver in July 2022, the lesion recurred and underwent hepatic angiography and embolization combined with interventional ablation treatment.

vNKT cell therapy, restoring immune balance

Although diagnosed at an early stage, the repeated recurrences and metastases reminded Mr. Feng not to take it lightly. After the fourth surgery, Mr. Feng contacted Professor Zhang Minghui's team, hoping to address his concerns regarding recurrence and metastasis. After a detailed evaluation, the Lehe New Medicine team provided the following second consultation advice:

1. Hepatitis B is a major risk factor for liver cancer. Although surgery has removed the lesion, the underlying risk factor persists, which is a significant cause of postoperative recurrence.

2. After Mr. Feng underwent surgery to remove a large tumor from the left lobe of his liver, the lesion in the right lobe also showed enlargement and recurrence post-treatment, indicating an imbalance in the immune system. The occurrence of immune evasion allows cancer cells to gain the upper hand, leading to continuous recurrences.

3. When the immune system prevails, cancer cells are not to be feared. vNKT cells can rapidly kill residual cancer cells after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, strengthening the immune system. Only after the immune system suppresses the tumor can a balanced state be achieved where cancer cells and immune cells coexist.

4. All diseases originate from qi. Through active psychological healing to harmonize qi and regulate psychological state, combined with Lehe Qi and Blood courses to promote qi and blood circulation, physical fitness can be enhanced.

Mr. Feng commenced vNKT cell therapy on August 1, 2023, with a regimen of one course per month. As of April 2, 2024, he has completed nine courses. Imaging follow-up has shown stable results, and subsequent treatments will continue as planned.

Analysis and Commentary

After Mr. Feng received treatment according to Lehe's second consultation advice, his condition stabilized without recurrence, and his physical state changed significantly. Previously, he could not muster any energy to do things and felt exhausted after even a slight activity. During the treatment process, this state gradually changed, and he gradually became energetic, able to cope with daily life, and engage in light physical labor.

The unique blood supply mechanism of the liver, under the interaction of tumor cells, immune cells, and stromal cells, forms a unique immunosuppressive tumor immune microenvironment. The immunosuppressive tumor immune microenvironment protects tumor cells from immune surveillance, thereby promoting tumor recurrence and metastasis. The 5-year recurrence rate for patients with liver cancer after surgery is 40% to 60%, and the 5-year overall survival rate is 23% to 55% [1].

Although vNKT cells are extremely rare in the body, they can be expanded in vitro and then reinfused into the patient's body. As natural immune cells, they have the advantage of being safe and having minimal side effects. They are the ultimate killer of tumor cells. Once activated, they can defeat the enemy with one against a hundred, restoring the body's immune balance, prolonging survival, and improving quality of life.
