Eating Back to Health

Reinforcing the Gut Immune Barrier

For seven years, Professor An Yanjun (left) has been dedicated to promoting the popularization of healthy eating. He has discovered that many diseases are closely related to lifestyle, especially eating habits. He advocates the dietary concept of "starting with hunger and stopping when the stomach is full", eating back the problems caused by eating!

Professor An said, "Less is more, and more is less. I not only want to tell everyone what to eat, but also want to discuss with people 'why do people live'. The positive feedback from cancer patients also makes me believe that my class can really help people."

Student Brother Wang earnestly inquired, "If excessive intake of grains leads to elevated tumor markers, is there a specific intake standard?" Behind this seemingly professional question lies the genuine aspiration of a patient actively exploring the path to recovery.

In October 2023, Brother Wang was diagnosed with colon cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. After participating in the health promotion camp for the first time in July this year, he began to adjust his diet. Professor An's explanation on dietary fiber inspired him deeply, but he also found it difficult to implement in practice. He hopes to learn more systematically and deeply about nutrition and dietary management during recovery in the future.

Previously: Couldn't do without meat, often had late-night snacks, irregular lifestyle

Now: Mainly vegetables, brown rice, and germinated rice

In the classroom, whenever the lecturer introduces new content, student Brother Ji (right) immediately takes out his phone to take photos and record. "This is my second time participating in the health promotion camp. Many of the viewpoints taught by the professor are different from my previous understanding, giving me a new perspective on 'eating' and making me pay more attention to the impact of diet on health."

Since July, Brother Ji has been adjusting his diet according to the method recommended by the professor. After a month, Brother Ji feels that his body has become very relaxed, his weight has increased slightly, and his overall state is very good: he eats well, sleeps well, and has smooth excretion. He feels very comfortable in his bodily functions.

"I hope this activity can continue forever. I want to persist in attending all the classes and organize the content I have learned into key points to share with more friends in Kunshan." During this time in the health promotion camp, Brother Ji felt full of happiness and warmth. Every time he participated, he gained new insights, but he also needed to slowly digest and gradually form a healthy lifestyle that suited him.

Brother Ji realized that maintaining a joyful mood is very important, which is also the reason why many cancer patients are willing to participate.

Too little: The average daily intake of dietary fiber is less than 10 grams

Too much: The intake of lipids is 127 grams, far exceeding the reasonable range

Learning Gains

Balancing Diet and Mind

In 2018, recommended by a friend, Sister Feng, who suffered from breast cancer, followed Teacher Suihe. This time, she specially traveled from Urumqi, Xinjiang, by train for 39 hours. "The knowledge and experience I have learned in these two days have sparked many ideas in my mind. As the old saying goes, 'The master shows the door, but the disciple must practice on their own.' I didn't consume enough dietary fiber. Next, I need to digest this knowledge and turn it into my own, gradually summarizing a diet that suits me."

In the past eight years since her diagnosis with cancer, Sister Feng has been self-studying various knowledge. Although she hasn't reached the level of a professional medical practitioner, she has gained some basic understanding. She expressed her hope to learn practical content at Tzu Chi and shorten the time she spends exploring on her own.

At Tzu Chi, Sister Feng felt a relaxed atmosphere and tasted the authentic vegetarian food, especially the breakfast which gave her a "homely feeling". She looks forward to learning how to make healthy and delicious meals using common ingredients in the future: "Teach us some simple and easy methods so that my family and friends can eat healthily. This way, the dissemination will be broader, and the nutrition will come from safer foods."

Gao Jie, from Shanxi, is known as "Happy Sister Gao". Eleven years after her breast cancer surgery, she said her greatest luck was meeting the amiable teacher right after she got sick.

Sister Gao has participated in the Xingshan Camp five times, and each time she attends the lectures, she gains new insights. Not only does she volunteer locally, but she has also established a group for patients in Shanxi to share her recovery experiences. "Using my love and the path I have traveled, I want to help more sisters recover better and better on their anti-cancer journey!"

This is the first time Sister Gao has visited the Suzhou Tzu Chi Industrial Park. She has often heard the amiable teacher talk about Tzu Chi, and as soon as she entered the industrial park, she felt a sense of familiarity. "A few days ago, my face was gray, but today when I look in the mirror, my face is bright. I feel full of vitality and in a particularly good mood, so I wanted to come and volunteer. I will come again next time."

Before coming: pale face

2 days later: full of energy, in a particularly good mood

Love in the World

Transforming Cancer with Love

In April this year, Ms. Guo, a student, suspected bone metastasis and sought help from Teacher Suihe immediately.

When they met again, she embraced the energy and hope like a child finding her family. The health promotion camp allowed her to truly let go of her psychological burden, making her feel much lighter. She discovered that she could also do charity and give love.

Mr. Li and Ms. Deng, a cancer-stricken couple from Shanghai, are attempting comprehensive rehabilitation methods for Mr. Li's stomach cancer, which has not undergone surgery. He consulted professors on the treatment of anemia after chemotherapy. Ms. Deng accompanied her husband from Xingshan to Tzu Chi, experiencing the warmth between people and strengthening her belief: no matter how difficult it is, we must accompany and make those around us happy.

At the Tzu Chi Health Promotion Camp, the participants felt the warmth of medical humanity, acquired the latest knowledge from experts, and learned from seniors - to face illness with a smile!
